The goal of salvation is God dwelling with His people in a marital union – Christ the Bridegroom and the Church His Bride. These roles are not mere imagery but are the true nature of the masculine God and His feminine creation. We men and women are created as icons of that fundamental reality. Our understanding of manhood and womanhood, then, unavoidably impacts our understanding of the saving Christian faith, who our God is, and our relationship with Him.
Is God masculine? Is God feminine? Is God beyond gender? This article is an attempt to demonstrate the obvious and to suggest why many today give an incorrect answer to these questions.
If masculinity and femininity are “hard-wired” by the fact of God’s creating them at the beginning, why do so many men appear to have feminine characteristics, and women appear to have masculine ones?
